BEST FLY FISHING SPOTS NEAR PARK CITY
PARK CITY FLY FISHING GUIDES
Park City, Utah, is known for many things, including its ski slopes, hiking trails, and superb mountain views. And if you’re interested in fly fishing in Utah, there’s no better destination than Park City.
Ask any of the many Park City fly fishing guides in the area, and they’ll tell you the same thing: Summit County, Utah, is the place to be if you want to spend time on the water. That leads to the million-dollar question, Where are the best fly fishing spots near Park City?
While there’s no right or wrong answer to this question, we’ve chosen five destinations — in no particular order — that offer fantastic fishing, world-class views, and so much more.
1. PROVO RIVER
There’s a lot to like about fly fishing on the Provo River, including the fact that it’s only a short drive from Park City. Add to this the fact that there are plenty of fishing holes to visit, and you have some of the best fly fishing in Utah.
LOWER PROVO RIVER
Not only does the Lower Provo River have a large population of brown and rainbow trout, but it’s known for a lot of big fish — and that’s what most people are chasing.
If you’re visiting the Lower Provo River for the first time, start with one of the access points along US Highway 89. There’s plenty of parking, along with access to areas that are easy to wade.
MIDDLE PROVO RIVER
Most guides will tell you that fish on the Middle Provo River are smaller than the Lower Provo River, but don’t let that stop you. Even if the fish are smaller, the views are incredible and the top fishing holes are generally less crowded.
2. WEBER RIVER
There’s no shortage of fly fishing hot spots on the Weber River, especially when you factor in the many small tributaries. It is home to a large concentration of species, including rainbow trout, brown trout, and high-mountain cutthroat.
Since a large portion of the Weber River sits on private property, be careful about where you enter the water. If you’re seeking an area with nice views and public access, I-84 will suit you well. For a more secluded experience, check out the areas of Coalville and Oakley.
3. GREEN RIVER
Are you okay with the idea of driving a few hours to reach one of the region’s top fly fishing destinations? If so, hop in your car and head for the Green River. Located roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Park City, the Green River is known for its breathtaking views, trophy-size trout, and professional guide services.
While a day trip is possible, many people who visit the Green River turn it into a multi-day fly fishing experience. With plenty of lodging and camping accommodations in the area, it’s easy to find somewhere to relax when you’re not on the water.
4. STRAWBERRY RIVER
Approximately one hour from Park City, the Strawberry River is one of the best fly fishing locations within easy driving distance.
When compared to other rivers on the list — especially the Provo and Weber — the Strawberry River is much more secluded and remote. You could fish all day and never see another person. Because of this, the Strawberry River is a top choice among Park City residents seeking a peaceful day (or several days) on the water.
5. STARVATION RESERVOIR
There’s more to Starvation Reservoir than its unique name. Located about 1.5 hours from Park City, the deep blue water surrounded by rock cliffs provides a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
Starvation Reservoir doesn’t have nearly as many rainbow trout as it once did, but its population of brown trout has never been higher. In fact, every year, a handful of 10-pound brown trouts are caught here. Other popular species in Starvation Reservoir include kokanee salmon, walleye, crappie, yellow perch, and bluegill.
